Freight Train Derails and Falls into River

A CSX freight train derailed on a bridge above the Anacostia River on Friday, November 9 and 10 of the 90 rail cars fell into the water. There were no injuries due to the accident.

The train was parked with no passengers or crew aboard when another freight train ran into it. The Fire Department stated that the cause was unknown and that the National Transportation Safety Board would be investigating the incident.

Several fireboats and other emergency vehicles responded, including some engine companies with hazardous materials units that came to the scene as a precaution. The crash dumped coal into the river, along with hydraulic fluid and oil from the train cars, District of Columbia Fire Department spokesman Alan Etter said.

The water in the river seems to have a oily sheen to it which could mean some petroleum products made it into the river, but pH tests so far have been neutral. Structural engineers are checking the bridge for damage and want the rest of the rail cars moved; they believe there has been some structural damage to the bridge.

For more information on this subject, please refer to our section on Airlines, Cruises, Buses, and Other Mass Transit Accidents.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Jenny Albano

Two Teenagers Hit By Out-of-Control ATV

On Saturday night the driver of an all-terrain vehicle (ATV), K.C. Sanchez, 32, lost control and hit two teenage boys on skateboards.

The driver of the ATV was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center with a serious head injury; the passenger on the ATV was also injured and was transported to Capital Medical Center.

The skateboarders hit by the ATV were transported to Providence St. Peter Hospital with potentially serious injuries, according to the police.

The Washington legislature has codified (made into law) the "rules of the road". The rules of the road have a special application to pedestrians, skateboarders and bicyclists. Firms within the network have handled cases involving all of these groups in addition to persons injured in run of the mill car accidents.

For more information on this subject matter, please refer to the section on Car and Motorcycle Accidents.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Michael Myers

University of Washington Student Victim of Hit and Run

UW senior Joshua Nelson was injured last Friday when his motorcyle was struck by a dark sedan in the University District in Seattle, Washington. The driver's identity is unknown and Mr. Nelson is asking for any witnesses to come forward.

Apparently the collision occurred when the sedan took a right turn as Mr. Nelson was also turning, swiping him on its passenger side. Mr. Nelson was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

It is very important that Mr. Nelson and his family report his accident immediately to any insurance carriers who may have provided coverage for the motorcycle and, possibly, any other vehicles owned by Mr. Nelson and his family. "Uninsured motorist" coverage applies to unidentified or "phantom" vehicles. Insurance policies often have reporting requirements for accidents involving phantom vehicles.

Read more: Casey McNerthney, Seattle P-I

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Ryan Nute

Motorcyclist, Motorist Hospitalized

A 22-year old motorcyclist from Kirkland, Washington remains in the hospital at Harborview Medical Center after a collision with a car on Monday. The driver of the car was taken to Evergreen Hospital.

The motorcyle and the car collided when the car turned into a parking lot. The cause of the crash is still being investigated.

Motorcycles are treated differently than cars for purposes of Washington's insurance laws. Auto insurance policies frequently exclude motorcycles from coverage; special coverage must usually be purchased specifically for the motorcycle. RCW 46.30.020, which requires mandatory liability insurance for cars, expressly excludes motorcycles. Under RCW 48.22.030 insurance companies which elect to write motorcycle policies must offer uninsured and underinsured ("UIM") coverage, which the insured has the option of rejecting.

Read more: Everett Herald; Revised Code of Washington

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Ryan Nute
