Did you know that the FDA has a medical device database? This database, called "MAUDE", contains information from doctors and patients regarding medical devices that may have malfunctioned or failed in the past. Unfortunately, there is a surprising amount of information available on failed medical devices, many of which are still in use.

When you go to the site, you can enter the name of the medical device that you have concerns about. The database will then perform a search. Recently I performed a search for a failed medical device and found 44 complaints, including complaints made by the doctors who had used the device on patients. This device is still in general use and has not been pulled from the shelves.

If you are considering the use or implantation of a medical device, you should check this website. If you have been injured by the use or implantation of a medical device, you should check the site and see if other people have had a similar experience.
