On February 7, 2006, the Tacoma Daily Index reported on an alarming study regarding container trucks:

The issue arose after police officers noticed a spike in the number of accidents involving container trucks on Pacific Highway East, which runs through the city. Officers operated emphasis patrols on Sept. 23 and Oct. 25 to inspect container trucks, and discovered that a number of vehicles operated in violation of safety laws.

On Sept. 23, police officers inspected 30 vehicles in 7 hours and found 90 violations. Officers issued 71 written warnings and 19 formal notices of infractions. Fourteen orders were issued placing vehicles out of service.

The most concerning problems with the container trucks have been related to the braking system. According to the Daily Index, police found defective low-air warning devices, inoperable braking devices, air leaks, worn air lines, and brakes out of adjustment.

These types of problems with large trucks are a concern in heavy traffic. Often, these trucks have to stop abruptly to avoid hitting a passenger vehicle. With so many trucks being poorly maintained, regular drivers need to be especially careful when driving on the highway with these large trucks.

If you or someone you know has been injured in a truck accident, you should contact a personal injury attorney right away. You need to know what your legal rights and responsibilities are.
