The Tacoma News Tribune reported today that driver inattention is the number one cause of car crashes in the United States. Did you know that over 43,000 people died in car crashes in the U.S. last year?

The study used cameras and sensors installed in 100 cars to track 241 drivers' behavior over roughly a year of driving, compiling 2 million miles of travel. Drivers ranged in age from 18 to 73 years; 60 percent were men, 40 percent women.

The study didn't comment on gender differences, but did find that 18 - 20 year olds are more likely to be distracted than those over age 35. Surprisingly, talking on a cell phone was not a major source of distraction, although the process of dialing the phone was. Being drowsy was linked as a major cause of crashes.

A driver singing along with the radio was a sign of an alert driver, in other words, a good driver. Next time you see someone singing out loud, don't laugh, be glad they are singing and not sleeping.

If you have been injured because of someone's inattention, you should contact a personal injury attorney immediately.
